Lesson 5 Discussion 5.2

Q Practical Application • This discussion refers to the “telephone” game. If you don’t remember from childhood, this is how the game is played; information is passed from one person to another via whisper. The information is communicated through a number of different people and the last person states what they heard. • Based on what you know about the reconstructive nature of memory, what can you suggest are some reasons why the message often changes so dramatically from the message that the first person states to the one the last person receives? • Perform the following tasks: • Step 1: Post your initial response to the discussion topic on the discussion board (250 words). (This is due by Thursday) • Step 2: Read other students' posts and respond to at least two other students (100 words). (This is due by Sunday) • Step 3: Instructor reviews posts.

In the telephone games where we used to take turns whispering a message into the ear of the next person, by the time the last individual speaks that message loudly, the message has radically changed. However, this has been due to the retelling of the message, as when each individual tries to remember information that occurs in the past, they try to reconstruct those memories, and in that process, individual changes the information or tries to fill the gap that is by adding or editing that information that was not even present in the original message.
